Firewise USA
Firewise USA is a national program that helps communities reduce wildfire risk through education, cooperation, and collective action. Several neighborhoods in our area have already earned recognition.
What is Firewise USA?
Firewise USA is a voluntary program administered by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). It provides a framework for communities to organize around wildfire risk reduction -- from creating defensible space to advocating for fire-resistant building practices.
A Firewise USA recognized community is one where neighbors have come together to assess their wildfire risk, create an action plan, and invest time and resources in reducing that risk.

How to Get Recognized
- Form a Firewise board or committee (minimum 3 residents)
- Complete a community wildfire risk assessment (WPV-Ready can assist)
- Create a written action plan addressing identified risks
- Invest a minimum of $25.79 per dwelling unit annually in risk reduction activities
- Host at least one Firewise education event per year
- Submit application through the NFPA Firewise USA portal
- Renew annually to maintain your Firewise status
What Counts Toward the Investment?
Insurance Benefits
Some insurance carriers offer discounts for properties in Firewise USA recognized communities. In areas where wildfire insurance is becoming more expensive or difficult to obtain, Firewise recognition can be a valuable tool for maintaining coverage.
Check with your insurance carrier to see if Firewise recognition qualifies you for reduced premiums or improved coverage options.
