Know the difference between a Warning and an Order, and have a plan for each. Leave early.

Please Leave Early And Save Everyone

If you think it might be time to evacuate, evacuate. Don't wait for official notification. Your life is more important than your property.

Evacuation Levels

Advisory (Level 1)

Be aware and monitor conditions. Prepare to leave. Load your vehicle. This is the time to notify family.

Warning (Level 2)

Be SET to evacuate. You should strongly consider leaving now, especially if you have pets, livestock, elderly family members, or mobility challenges. Don't wait for the Order.

Order (Level 3)

GO! Leave immediately. Danger is imminent. Do not delay for any reason.

Before You Need to Evacuate

  • Know your Genasys/Zonehaven evacuation zone
  • Have your go-bag packed and by the door
  • Know two evacuation routes from your home
  • Keep your car's gas tank at least half full during fire season
  • Back your car into the garage or driveway for quick departure
  • Sign up for SMCAlert notifications
  • Discuss your plan with all family members

During Evacuation

  • Take your go-bag, medications, pets, and important documents
  • Wear long pants, long sleeves, and sturdy closed-toe shoes
  • Close all windows and doors (leave unlocked for firefighters)
  • Turn off propane and gas at the tank
  • Leave interior and exterior lights on
  • Move flammable furniture to the center of rooms, away from windows
  • Take down thin curtains and close heavy drapes
  • Turn off air conditioning
  • Leave a note on the door telling firefighters you've evacuated
  • Follow the route designated by authorities -- don't take shortcuts
  • Drive with headlights on and windows up
  • Watch for emergency vehicles and yield to them
  • Check on neighbors if safe to do so

After Evacuation

  • Do not return home until authorities say it is safe
  • Check for structural damage before entering
  • Check for gas leaks, electrical damage, and water contamination
  • Document any damage with photos for insurance
  • Watch for hazards: hot spots, weakened trees, downed power lines
  • Check on neighbors
