In An Emergency

When disaster strikes, knowing what to do in the first minutes can save your life and the lives of those around you.

P.L.E.A.S.E. -- Please Leave Early And Save Everyone

Most deaths in wildfires are people who left too late. If you think it might be time to evacuate, evacuate. Don't wait for official notification. Your life is more important than your property.

Wildfire Evacuation

  • Leave early -- don't wait for an official evacuation order
  • Follow your pre-planned evacuation route
  • Take your go-bag, medications, pets, and important documents
  • Wear long pants, long sleeves, and sturdy shoes
  • Close all windows and doors (but leave them unlocked for firefighters)
  • Turn off propane and gas
  • Move flammable furniture away from windows
  • Leave lights on so firefighters can see your home in smoke
  • Check on neighbors, especially elderly or those with mobility issues

Earthquake Response

During the Shaking

  • DROP to your hands and knees
  • Take COVER under a sturdy desk or table
  • HOLD ON until the shaking stops
  • If no shelter is nearby, crouch next to an interior wall and protect your head
  • Stay away from windows, exterior walls, and heavy objects that could fall
  • If outdoors, move to an open area away from buildings, trees, and power lines

After the Shaking

  • Check yourself and others for injuries
  • If you smell gas, open windows, leave the building, and call 911
  • Check for structural damage before re-entering buildings
  • Expect aftershocks -- they can be as strong as the initial quake
  • Use text messages instead of phone calls to keep lines clear
  • Listen to battery-powered radio for emergency information
  • Check on neighbors
